Ubisoft’s For Honor is aiming to reinvent combat controls

One of many surprise announcements at Ubisoft’s E3 news conference was the reveal of new IP For Honor. It pits Knights, Samurai and Vikings against each other inside a multiplayer-focussed combat game. The sport my try taking some historical liberties of these warriors smacking one another around, but Ubisoft are tying to create each faction an exceptional prospect. The ‘Warborn' Vikings are fiery and aggressive, the ‘Chosen’ samurais value combat mastery while ‘Legions’ Knights give attention to controlled thrust and parry.

“The goal would be to place you on the battlefield, sword on hand.” says game director Jason Vandenberghe. “And provide you with the latest way to fight.” Vandenberghe says he wants to do for sword combat what games like Halo did for first-person shooters on console. In lieu of button presses, the sword is controlled with the right stick and swung with measured precision. The combat itself looks steady and heavy, looking to replicate the impression of any muscular warrior clad in heavy armour. The multiplayer is placed as 4v4 skirmishes, with objectives for example capturing certain points with a map.

For Honor is one area of any passion project for Vandenberghe, who was director on Red Steel 2. A ‘western fighting styles’ enthusiast, Vandenberghe says they have been pitching this game for 12 years and finally had saving money light, both because of the advanced technology of the latest consoles along with the rising interest in medieval and violent shows like Bet on Thrones. For Honor is multiplayer planned, but will also have a complete single-player campaign when it launches on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 pick up.
